Thoughts on drawing cartoons

Tue Apr 28, 2009, 9:07 AM
Okay, just to make things clear, for all the intents and purposes of this journal entry, let us call the animation style done in the west as cartoons and the animation style done in the east as anime, for the sake of argument.

For those who hasn't seen oodles of doodles yet, here's the scenario: I used to hate drawing cartoons because I sucked at it. I also used to hate drawing fan art (whether cartoons or anime) for the same reason. There was something that would go wrong whenever I attempted to do any of the two, either it wouldn't look like the character I was doing or whatever. So I all I have drawn for the past years were my own original characters. The last fan art I made was for a 4th year high school project that Involved silk screening and I made the Tim Drake Robin. And before that I drew Kenshin from Ruronin Kenshin and Yusuke from Yu Yu Hakusho as a high school freshman. And boy did those suck. And before those, in grade school... I wouldn't even want to remember it. So here comes a phobia of drawing something already made by another artist.

Maybe, somewhere in the back of my mind, either I couldn't budge to welcome another artist's style, or I respected the style too much I wouldn't have the gall to copy it. So arises another problem: If either of those are true then I shouldn't have had difficulty getting the general elements of a character and applying my own style to it like countless of artists have done throughout the history of art!
TLDR: What the hell was wrong with me? If I was doing my own character designs, it looked decent, but if I made/copied something already designed I would screw it up!
Sidestory:(I remember someone telling me that there are some people who have my problem in reverse: Can make and sometimes improve on the already made characters, but are unable to make original ones)

Anyway, fast forward to the present:
Recently, I did two little doodles that were fan-art and cartoons, albeit cartoons bordering on anime. And boy, I was playfully amused/excited/happy when they were done. (Sorry, no direct word for "naaliw" in Filipino)
I mean, first: These two looked pretty decent for doodles. Next, I found them easy to draw. Lastly, I found them quick to finish (never drew anything under ten minutes)
So what happened? Is it because cartoons easier to draw than Anime? Is it because I have made much progress in my artistic development? Maybe both? Argh... for now, maybe wouldn't waste my time to explain why I was able to make cartoons. I'll just accept it and thank my lucky stars that I could draw, living out life as that question, hoping that someday I would live out the answer.

Thanks for the fav, I appreciate it! Please have a look at the gallery if you have the time.
Good thing you told me to look at the gallery, otherwise I wouldn't have seen the grand work. It was just the inspiration I needed on something that I'm working on.
